Abdullah Muzammil Crowned State Champion in NJDA Lincoln-Douglas Debate

According to the New Jersey Debate Association (NJDA), South Plainfield High School's Abdullah Muzammil has been declared the winner of the prestigious Lincoln-Douglas Debate State Championship competition. This win puts him in the number-one position in one of the toughest academic competitions in the state.

Competing in a tough and virtual contest, Muzammil emerged victorious against the best debaters from the best public, private, and magnet schools in the state. In the finals, Muzammil won a unanimous vote from the judges in favor of his arguments. This is in addition to the already impressive resume Muzammil has by virtue of winning the Best Constructivist Award in previous competitions while at the South Plainfield Debate Club.

This year's state topic involved tough arguments about bioethics. The contestants had to argue on whether sovereign nations should emphasize public access to healthcare above patents and profits in the field of medicine. This required an understanding of economic theories, international laws, and medical ethics for both the affirmative and negative arguments.

“The ethics of expandin pharmaceuticals made us confront the real-world implications of biotech advancement, which looks to be very threatening, to be honest,” said Muzammil. “We had to do several weeks of lengthy research in the economics of health and philosophy. Ultimately, I am very proud to be representing South Plainfield High School in winning this. I would also like to take the chance to express my gratitude to Mr. Spolarich from SPHS who introduced me to debate.”

Muzammil’s victory stands as a significant milestone for South Plainfield High School, highlighting the district’s academic tradition and individual student achievement on the statewide stage.

According to conversations with Muzammil's friends, his passion for bioethics and healthcare policy extends far beyond the debate podium. Looking ahead, Muzammil hopes to pursue a career in public health and medicine, aiming to combine clinical practice with public service as a future physician and member of the U.S. Congress.
